Exploring Your Genetic Roots
Our DNA has special clues that tell us about our family history. These clues are passed down through each generation. They can help us learn where our ancestors came from and show how we are connected to people in Africa today.
Your DNA
Depending on which test you purchase, we analyze either the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that you inherited from your mother, the Y chromosome that men inherit from their fathers or autosomal DNA that you inherit from both parents. A simple swab from inside your cheek is all we need to begin the process.
Your DNA
Depending on the test you choose, we look at one of two types of DNA:
- DNA from your mother (called mitochondrial DNA)
- DNA from your father (only in those assigned male or intersex at birth, called the Y chromosome)
- To get started, we just need a quick swab from the inside of your cheek.
